What Is Supima Cotton? Why We Build With the World's Finest Fiber

The cotton that represents less than 1% of global supply

Most cotton is just cotton. It does the job — keeps you covered, washes reasonably well, and wears down after a year or two. But Supima is different. It's the rare designation for American-grown Pima cotton with extra-long staple (ELS) fibers, and it represents less than 1% of all cotton grown worldwide.

At El Saurio, we don't use it because it sounds impressive. We use it because it's the right material — and once you wear it, you'll understand why.

What makes Supima cotton different

Regular cotton fibers are short — typically 1 to 1.25 inches long. Supima cotton fibers are extra-long, measuring over 1.5 inches. That difference sounds small, but it changes everything about the fabric.

  • Softer feel: Longer fibers twist together more smoothly, creating a surface that's noticeably silkier than standard cotton.
  • More durable: Longer fibers produce a stronger yarn. Supima garments don't pill, fray, or wear thin as quickly.
  • Color retention: The fiber holds dye better, so your garment keeps its color wash after wash — even in direct sunlight.
  • Gets better over time: Unlike most fabrics that degrade, Supima actually softens with use while maintaining its shape.

Where Supima cotton comes from

Supima is grown exclusively in the United States — primarily in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The "Supima" name is trademarked, meaning any brand that uses it must source certified fiber from licensed American growers.

That traceability matters to us. We know where our cotton comes from. We know the standards it had to meet to earn the Supima mark. That's not something most fashion brands can say.

Supima vs. regular cotton — is it worth it?

Yes. The price difference on a finished garment — typically $5 to $20 more than a standard cotton tee — reflects a material that will outlast two or three cheaper shirts. Measured per wear, Supima cotton is almost always the better value.

We've worn both. There's no comparison.

Why El Saurio chose Supima

Our founder started El Saurio out of frustration — with garments that fell apart, brands that didn't care, and an industry that treated quality as optional. The search for a better standard led us directly to Supima.

Every El Saurio tee is made from certified Supima cotton. Our headwear and other pieces use certified organic cotton — a different fabric, but the same standard of integrity. We don't compromise on what goes into your clothes, because we believe the things you wear every day should be worth wearing.
